In a historic move toward continental unity, President John Dramani Mahama has approved a new free visa regime for all African nationals visiting Ghana. The policy was announced during the inaugural state visit of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, which concluded this past Friday.

The policy officially begins on May 25, 2026, in celebration of Africa Day.

The initiative will be integrated into a new electronic visa (e-visa) system launching next month. While travelers will still undergo screening, the visa will be issued gratis (free of charge).

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa noted that the move is designed to position Ghana as the “cradle of Pan-Africanism,” significantly boosting tourism and intra-African trade under the AfCFTA.

President Mahama emphasized that opening Ghana’s borders to fellow Africans is essential for regional integration. This reform places Ghana alongside nations like Rwanda and Benin in providing unrestricted access to African passport holders.

“Ghana seeks to consolidate its credentials as a leader in Pan-African unity, expecting a major surge in cross-border commerce and investment through this groundbreaking reform.” — Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa
